The “Gunny,” R. Lee Ermey, will make a special appearance Wednesday evening at the Awards Ceremony of the 46th National Police Shooting Championships, which concludes this week at the Shooting Range Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
A former Marine Corps Drill Instructor with Vietnam combat experience, Ermey is perhaps most known for his successful acting career. He has played the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann in Full Metal Jacket; the role of Mayor Tilman in Mississippi Burning; and the role of Sheriff Hoyt in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Ermey currently hosts Mail Call on The History Channel, answering military-related questions from viewers. He is an official spokesman for Glock firearms.
“We welcome Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey to this celebration of police pistol competition,” NRA’s Law Enforcement Activities Division Director Glen Hoyer said. “He has always been an ardent supporter of those who serve and he brings some star power to our awards ceremony.”
Wednesday’s NPSC ceremony will award more than $250,000 in trophies and prizes, offering competitors one of the finest prize tables in all of law enforcement competitive shooting. The NRA is thankful for the continued response of major NPSC sponsors, including Brownells, ProForce Law Enforcement, FNH, Heckler & Koch, Smith & Wesson, Glock, Beretta USA, Springfield Armory, DPMS Panther Arms, and Colt.
The value of NRA's National Police Shooting Championships lies in the fact that this competition realistically tests law enforcement shooting skills. Starting with guns holstered, competitors fire timed matches with both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols from varying distances and positions.
Held since 1962, the National Police Shooting Championship matches are just one of many programs directed by NRA’s Law Enforcement Activities Division (LEAD). These programs are supported by the Davidson’s Law Enforcement Endowment and the Law Enforcement Training Endowment of The NRA Foundation, including a generous $251,000 donation from Brownells, Inc., as well as donations from more than 100 other firearm and equipment manufacturers and businesses.
